World Mission Sunday
Circular 2005-20
To: All Parish Priests
WORLD MISSION SUNDAY is a day set aside for Catholics
to recommit themselves to the Universal Church’s
missionary activity. It is celebrated in every
country, in every diocese, in every parish –
whether in a remote chapel out in the African
bush or in a predominantly Muslim or Hindu area
of Asia or perhaps in a poor village in Latin
America. We are indeed citizens of the world,
members of the One Body of Christ.
We have to be impressed by the fact that every
country, even the poorest, gives to the mission
needs of the Church worldwide. For many it is
a great testimony of the power of the widow’s
mite. We Filipinos are generous in giving support
for the missions. Among those which submitted
its collections last year, The Philippines --
poor as it is -- ranked 25th in the world. In
the Philippines, Novaliches ranked 47th for the
same year. It is my hope that in the future
every parish of Novaliches will learn to give
its entire collection for The World Mission Sunday
because of the importance of its cause.
This year World Mission Sunday will be
celebrated on October 23, and in line
with the Year of the Eucharist, the theme is MISSION:
BREAD BROKEN FOR THE LIFE OF THE WORLD.
In his message for the World Mission Sunday 2005
the late Pope John Paul II says that “We
who nourish ourselves with the Body and Blood
of the crucified and risen Lord, cannot keep this
"gift" to ourselves; on the contrary
we must share it… In this way, while the
Eucharist helps us to understand more fully the
significance of mission, it leads every individual
believer… to be "bread, broken for
the life of the world." Humanity has need
of Christ "broken bread.”
Pastors should encourage their communities to
assist in the mission of the Church in spreading
the gospel.
For further details about the liturgy and remittances
please consult the Ordo 2005 and be guided accordingly.
Envelops are available in each vicariate.
Given in the Chancery in Fairview, Quezon City,
this 5th day of October, in the Year of the Lord,
2005.
