The History of Salvation

If one chooses to take one of the side entrances of the church, a different vista greets him. From the north entrance seven large oil paintings, about four by two point five meters big, take up all the visual range of the eye. These are arranged in two rows, three on top and four on the bottom. Entering the South entrance, on the other hand, eight paintings of the same size tower over the array of grilled doors, again arranged in two rows: three on top, and five on the bottom. These paintings were made to fit exactly into the spaces between the large piers and beams that support the roof and the wall.

In a way, it is a sublime form of preaching and educating the people of their history. During sermons, they function as visual aids for the priest, if he happens to be talking about subjects in reference to the paintings. All these fifteen oil paintings were works of inspiration by Charlie Anorico, a student of the famous Carlos “Botong” Francisco.

Utilizing folk colours, the visual impact of every painting is at once attractive and reflective. And while very intense hues were used for paintings depicting joyful occasions, it is only painting of the Crucifixion that employs somber tones.

It is apt that very Filipino visual interpretation of Biblical passages were installed in this church. They serve to constantly remind the Filipino people of God’s saving powers and to reflect on Jesus Christ as the medium through which we can attain a power for living, a breath of life and a source of nourishment for our souls.
